Trip To The Beach In Texas Planned? Beware Of FIREWORMS!

Please be aware of "fireworms" if you're heading to the beaches around Corpus Christi, Texas. These sea creatures are known for their painful sting, which can make your skin feel like it's burning for around three hours, as well as cause dizziness and nausea. The worms are dark brown with bristles on their body, small antennae, and range from six to 12 inches in length.

Jace Tunnell, Director of Community Engagement at the Harte Research Institute, advises beachgoers to be vigilant and to inform others if you see them. If you get stung, he recommends using duct tape to remove the bristles and treating the area with vinegar and warm water to alleviate the burning sensation. Also, something worth noting is that these worms reproduce asexually by splitting their bodies and can also reproduce sexually shortly after the full moon.
